Today’s Question: How do I build new habits?
We all have faced this challenge at some point in our lives, but lucky for you, the solution is quite simple. Building a habit has 3 elements to it.
The first element is consistency. The act of just showing up at the same place at the same time can start reinforcing the habit that needs to be built. You don’t need to work hard on the habit you would like to build. For the first 2 weeks, I suggest making your goals for the day, ridiculously small. If you are planning to walk for 30 minutes a day, don’t do more than 10 minutes for the first 2 weeks and then gradually increase. Make it so easy that you don’t have an excuse not to do it.
The second element is the guilt. You need to tackle this element, if you want to progress further and make those habits more long-term. The truth is that, even if you try to be consistent, you will find some days when you are unable to stick to your schedule. You need to acknowledge that and remember that it is totally ok to skip a day or two. You need to train your brain to restart, instead of giving up so easily. Think of it this way, it is hard for us to quit bad habits because even when you stop for a few days you relapse, so why not do that with good habits as well?
The last element is reducing resistance. Let’s take the example of a walk. If you had your running shoes ready and you saw them every time you sat on your couch, then you would be more likely to go for that walk. If you took the effort to create your favorite music playlist, that you would listen to on your walk, then you would end up going for that walk after all. Some days, we feel gloomy and unmotivated but those are the days that really count. Anyone can do things when they are motivated but doing something while feeling down is a routine you need to practice.
If you want to dive deeper into this topic I recommend you to read the book “Atomic Habits” by James Clear. It will help you understand the mindset of people trying to build new habits.
