Today’s Question: How do I deal with In-laws?
Well, you are either gifted with good In-laws or grumpy ones but here is how to deal with them:
Boundaries are Key: Decide what boundaries you need, so that you feel comfortable and communicate them clearly to your partner and in-laws. This could involve things like how often you visit, and how long you stay.
Mutual respect: Even if you disagree with your in-laws, treat them with basic courtesy and respect. You need to avoid insults or put them down. Sometimes, their words may hurt but that doesn’t mean you stoop to that level.
Pick your battles: You need to understand that not everything has to become a conflict. Let minor annoyances or differences go without argument. This takes practice but with time you will get there.
Know them: Getting to know your in-laws individually, apart from your partner, can help build connections. Try talking to them when you get the opportunity. It will take some time for you to adjust but can ease the tension between you and your in-laws.
Compromise is key: Look for compromises when disagreements arise over things like holidays, traditions, and raising your child. Finding a common ground is important.
Breaks: You don't have to spend every holiday or vacation with your in-laws. Take breaks to recharge and spend quality time with your partner. Stay relaxed and find your peace with the situation.
Hope this helps you out. We all need to deal with our in-laws but that is ok. Treat them like family and you will be fine.
